Yep - when it rains here (apparently for 2 straight months later in the summer) the ground is so dry and hard that it won't absorb the water. It all needs somewhere to go, so it "washes" down the ditches... But when it's not raining it is a wildlife haven. We have cayotes living in one right next to our neighborhood! I've seen him twice...luckily never too close!

The wash? I'm guessing it's a giant ditch for the desert. Weird.
